More on Off-duty Police Shooting

If you recall, I wrote in to inform many of you about a shooting that took place in the Richmond neighborhood. More news has come out since the last post, and I would like to address it. More and more witnesses have come out to give their story about what had happened that night. Vincent Cheever, 17,gave his story. Cheever told police that Bill Panas, the man shot, was not one to start fights. He also stated that the officer never identified himself as an officer at the time of the incident. Cheever claimed that when a fight broke out, Tepper, the off duty officer, came out of his house to try and break it up. He was hit in the face with a punch, and that is when he drew his gun, waving it around at nearly everyone, stated Cheever. Cheever then went on to say that after everyone had ran down the street, Bill stuck around and said, "Come on, your not going to shoot me". Tepper then responded with "Oh, yeah?" Bill was shot in the chest and taken to Temple University Hospital where he died at 11:33 p.m.

Officer Tepper has been placed on desk duty while this investigation continues to grow. He has been with the police force since 1993 and is currently making $58,610.00. As of now, officer Tepper has not commented on the investigation.

Regarding New PA State Troopers

Over the weekend I did some research on the Pennsylvania State Police academy procedures. I myself have been considering going to the academy which is located in Hershey, PA. The academy runs for approximately 7 months and requires you to live there. Visitors are allowed on Sundays, but only on occasions. Cadets are allowed to go home on the weekends as long as they have completed all their tests with a score of 70% or better. Unfortunately, during my research I discovered that the academy has been put on hold for lack of funds. The PSP are looking for new sources to fund the program. The PSP program is a paid academy, which provides cadets a $1,500.00 paycheck bi-weekly before taxes. As of their last announcement, the October of 2009 class has been indefinitely delayed. So for anyone planning on filing an application form for the PSP, just be aware that you may not receive any feedback from them for quite some time, or not until they receive adequate funding. To read more about what exactly the PSP is all about, check out their website listed below.

Weed Stuck to Forehead

I recently read a short article about a man who got arrested for possession. You wouldn't believe how they found it. To make a long story short, a man 29 years of age, went into a convenience store and had a bag of weed stuck to his forehead. When an officer saw the man looking into his baseball cap, they got suspicious. When the man put his baseball cap back on his head, the bag of weed must have gotten stuck on his forehead. The officers went over to the man, peeled the bag of weed of his forehead and placed him under arrest.

Deadliest Job in Policing

Over the weekend I came across an article that caught my attention. The headline was, "The Deadliest Job in Policing". It caught my eye for several reasons. For starters, I was curious as to what they meant by "the deadliest job" and secondly, I wanted to know what area they were talking about. As I started to read the article, several things took my by surprised. For starters, the first major question asked was where were you most likely to die at if you were a police officer. The answer was Texas. Then going down the list was California, New York, Illinois, Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania (7th), Missouri, Michigan, and Georgia rounding out the 10th spot. I was pretty amazed to find Pennsylvania at number 7 on the list. I would have thought that P.A. would have been farther down the list or not even mentioned in the top 10 at all. The second big topic discussed was "What are you most likely to be doing when you are killed". According to the article, dying as a result of a gunshot wound is the least likely cause of death. The article stated that one is 190% more likely to die from an accidental event than you are from a gunshot wound. Also, you have a 400% change of dying if you write out a citation outside of your police car vs. inside of the police car. So to sum up the article, the worst thing a police officer can do according to this article is write up a ticket outside of your police car in Texas, California, and New York. I know this seems like a wired thing to write about, being that it is about death rates for police officers, but the topic struck my interest, and I learned quite a bit of new information from it. So if you are interested in reading the entire article or just commenting on it, feel free to check out the link below or write in a comment.
