3 Officers Slain in Pittsburgh

It was the deparments first fatalities since 1995. Over the weekend, 3 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania police officers were shot and killed by a man by the name of Richard Poplawski. "We have never had to lose three officers in the line of duty at one time at one call," Harper said. Nathan Harper is the current police cheif for the Pittsburgh police department. The suspect surrendered around 11 a.m. outside of his home in Stanton Heights. He was wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with an AK-47, a rifle, and a pistol. The suspect fired about 100 rounds during the standoff at his house Harper stated. Poplawski was taken into custody, and is expected to be charged with homicide, aggravated assault, and other related offenses. The first officer to approach the scene was shot and killed, and the other two officers were killled while trying to assist their fellow officers. The entire incidient started when the suspect opened fire out of his bedroom window against on coming police. Some of the near by neighbors were evacuated during the standoff. Police say they have responded to calls from that same house two or three times in the past.
